NUTRITION & LIFESTYLE COUNSELING

Today, most chronic diseases are lifestyle diseases, and one of the common elements to all these conditions is the growing medical literature about the ways lifestyle and dietary changes are not only preventative, but are also treatments for these conditions.

For example:

  • Chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis – are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in the U.S.  Four modifiable health risk behaviors - lack of physical activity, poor nutrition, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption are responsible for much of the illness, suffering, and early death related to chronic diseases.
  • The “EPIC” study from the Archives of Internal Medicine studied 23,000 people’s adherence to 4 simple lifestyle behaviors (not smoking, exercising 30 minutes a day, eating a whole food, nutritious diet, and keeping Body Mass Index below 30 (obesity = BMI > 30). For those following these lifestyle behaviors, 93% of diabetes, 81% of heart attacks, 50 % of strokes and 36% of all cancers were prevented.

  • The INTERHEART study in 2004 looked at 30,000 people in 52 countries and found that attention to lifestyle factors prevented 90% of heart disease in both sexes, in all age groups, in all countries.

Nutritional Medicine

The most powerful medicine we have is food!

Nutrition Medicine is a combined medical-nutritional approach for the prevention, treatment, and management of disease. It is based on an evolving scientific framework that views physiological and biochemical disturbance as a prime causal factor in the development and progression of disease. From this perspective, each person has a unique pattern of metabolic activity and nutrient requirements that depends on their genetics and the impact of internal and external environmental factors.

Nutrition Medicine seeks to investigate the disturbances in body chemistry, caused by nutritional imbalance, resulting from improper diet, food sensitivity reactions, gastrointestinal dysfunction, inflammation and environmental toxic agents, which are contributing to the patient’s illness. Once identified, nutritional balance can be restored with informed dietary plans and nutrient supplement protocols, integrated with ongoing medical treatment, to improve patient health outcomes.

Some nutritional treatments may include:

  • Dietary modifications
  • Whole foods
  • Therapeutic nutritional supplements
  • Nutrient injections & IV’s (vitamins, minerals, and other natural substances)
  • And other natural substances

Lifestyle Medicine

Lifestyle Medicine involves the therapeutic use of lifestyle interventions in the prevention, treatment and management of disease.

  • Diet and Nutrition
  • Exercise & Movement
  • Stress Management
  • Sleep & Relaxation
  • Tobacco & Alcohol Cessation
  • Healthy Relationships

INTRAVENOUS (IV) NUTRIENT THERAPY

IV Nutrient Therapy.jpg

What is Intravenous (IV) Nutrient Therapy?

IV Nutrient Therapy is a safe and powerful therapy in which various vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are administered directly into the bloodstream (intra-venous). It is the most efficient way to administer nutrient into the body as all the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are immediately available for use.

There are several advantages of giving the body nutrients intravenously:

  • Eliminate any alteration in the nutrients which may occur from the actions of digestive enzymes.
  • The amount of nutrients in the blood can reach much higher, more therapeutic levels faster than is possible by absorbing nutrients (food or supplements) through the gastro-intestinal (GI) system
  • Various nutrients exert pharmacological effects, which are in many cases dependent on the blood concentration of the nutrient.  These concentrations are not obtainable with oral supplementation or intra-muscular (IM) injections.
  • Some patients, in fact many Americans, may have an impaired digestive system, which results in poor nutrient absorption and assimilation.

The “Myers Cocktail”

The Myers' Cocktail is a name given to a basic IV nutrient protocol.  The “Myers’” is the first-line IV nutrient therapy used for many conditions and typically contains:

  • Vitamin C
  • B-Vitamins: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc, Selenium and other trace Minerals

The "Myers Cocktail" was named after the late John Myers, MD, an internist from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.  Dr. Myers pioneered the use of IV vitamins and minerals as part of the overall treatment of various medical problems.

Some of the most extensive evidence for the effectiveness of the IV Nutrient Therapy was compiled by Alan Gaby MD, who also practiced in Baltimore and writes extensively about nutritional factors in medicine.  Dr. Gaby took over many of Dr. Myers' patients after his death in 1984.  He administered more than 15,000 Myers' injections over an 11-year period in an outpatient setting.   A summary of this work was published in Alternative Medicine Review, Vol. 7, No. 5, 2002.

There many other IV protocols, which are customized based on each individual patient and their condition.

NATURAL MEDICINES & SUPPLEMENTS

Making your care more direct means cutting out the middleman. Why? It’s better care and middlemen add cost. For added convenience and value, we carry many physician-grade natural supplements which can be dispensed right in our office. You’re free to go anywhere you choose, but you’ll be surprised how inexpensively we can dispense your supplements right in the office.

What is Physician-Grade?

The daunting number of products on the market, the overstated health claims, and the large variations in quality create a minefield of obstacles for anyone trying to find the right natural supplements.  Infinium Med carries several high-quality, professional-grade natural supplements, which provide:

  • Assurance of high-quality products - Not all brands are created equal - the supplement industry includes a broad range of quality and effectiveness.  Some of the products available make overstated health claims, being more concerned with marketing than with clinical effectiveness and medical research.  In addition, products that are not rigorously tested for purity are sometimes contaminated or contain cheaper, less-effective forms of key ingredients.

Requirements that we use when choosing supplements:

  1. Scientifically-Based - Products that have some basis in basic science, clinical trials, or have a long history of use and safety.

  2. High Quality Manufacturing – Nutraceutical companies that good manufacturing practices (GMP) for drug or supplement standards.
  • Increased Treatment Effectiveness - It is important that you choose high-quality products because quality does make a difference in terms of how effective the supplements can be.  If different products are used, it is not always clear whether the supplement quality or formulation is the cause of a less effective result.

Natural Supplements

These are typically a combination of various therapeutic natural substances formulated for general health (i.e. multi-vitamin) or for the treatment of specific conditions (i.e. diabetes). They may include vitamins, minerals, fish oils, botanical medicines, animal tissue (i.e. glandulars), and other therapeutic natural substances.

Botanical Medicine

Botanical Medicine is the use of plants to treat disease and promote health.  Plants have been used in this way by many cultures, from pre-history to today.  According to the World Health Organization, over 25% of modern drug medicines are derived from plants with similar traditional uses.

Plant substances are powerful medicines.  When used in proper dose and combinations, botanical medicines are safe and effective, producing few, if any, side effects.  However, certain botanical medicines are more powerful and need to be used with caution, as they can be toxic in large amounts.  In many cases it is possible to take certain botanicals with certain medications.  However, there can be “herb-drug” interactions.

Compounded Natural Medicines

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Compounded medications are made based on a licensed healthcare provider’s prescription in which individual ingredients (prescription medications and/or natural substances) are mixed together in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient. This method allows the compounding pharmacist to work with the patient and the prescriber to customize a medication to meet the patient’s specific needs.

PRESCRIPTION & OTC MEDICATIONS

Making your care more direct means cutting out the middleman. Why? It’s better care and middlemen add cost. For added convenience and value, we carry many common prescription medications which can be dispensed and/or administered right in our office. You’ll always have the option to use your insurance and fill your prescription at your pharmacy of choice, but you’ll be surprised how inexpensively we can dispense your medications in the office.

Medications

Prescription Medications

At Infinium Med, prescription medications are typically not a first-line therapy, however in some cases your treatment may necessitate prescription medications. These medications are either dispensed in our office, a retail pharmacy, or a compounding pharmacy.

Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medications

OTC medications do not require a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider, however that does not mean they are benign. They should be used appropriately and as directed by your healthcare provider and/or package instructions. As with prescription medications, your treatment may require the use of OTC medications.

***** We DO NOT carry any narcotics (pain medications), benzodiazepines (anti-anxiety medications), or sleep medications (i.e. Ambien) in the office. These medications must be filled at your pharmacy. *****

HORMONE THERAPY

Your body has a complex collection of glands called the endocrine system. Each of these glands synthesizes and secrete different chemical messengers called hormones. These hormones enter the blood stream which carries them to the different tissues in the body where they exert their function. Reduced or excessive levels of these hormones can wreak havoc on the physiology of the body and among others, can affect energy levels, reproductive and sexual health, cognition, weight, and sleep.

Hormone therapy, especially with bio-identical hormones (biologically identical on a molecular level to the ones your body makes), has proven to be an effective therapy for the relief of hormone imbalance and age-related symptoms in both women and men. At Infinium Med, hormone therapy is used to help women and men of any age achieve an optimal hormone balance and increased well-being.

Commonly Used Hormones

Most of the hormones, including the bio-identicals, are available through compounding pharmacies. These licensed pharmacies are capable of providing you with any drug from pharmaceutical companies, however they are also able to acquire the pure pharmaceutical-grade hormones and compound it into the dose and form that you and your physician prefer.

The most commonly used bio-identical hormones are testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. However, there are many other types of hormone available:

  • Thyroid
  • Cortisol
  • DHEA
  • Melatonin
  • Pregnenolone
  • And more …

Methods of Hormone Administration

At Infinium Med, we use several methods to administer your hormones. Factors, such as your medical condition and your lifestyle are taken into account to determine which method is the best fit for you.

  • Topical Creams & Gels
  • Suppositories
  • Pills Forms
  • Troches
  • Intramuscular Injections
  • Hormone Pellets

LOW-DOSE NALTREXONE

What is Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)?

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a safe, inexpensive, yet underused medication that is extremely beneficial for patients with any condition marked by immune system dysfunction. Traditionally, Naltrexone has been used in higher doses (50 mg) for decades to help patients recover from addiction to alcohol, heroin, and other opiate drugs. However, more than 20 years ago, it was discovered that very small doses of Naltrexone (1.5 to 4.5 mg) can have profound effects on the immune system.

LDN works by boosting levels of specific peptides (a.k.a. endorphins) produced in the brain and adrenal glands, that are best known for relieving pain and enhancing sense of well-being. These natural peptides are also powerful modulators of the immune system. When LDN is taken at bedtime, it attaches to opioid receptors and temporarily blocks endorphins from attaching. This signals the body to increase production of endorphins, which helps orchestrate the activity of stem cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, T and B cells, and other immune cells. As a result, LDN enhances the body’s ability to fight disease.

Who does LDN help?

LDN is safe, effective, and inexpensive and although it’s gaining increasing recognition as a highly effective therapy for conditions ranging from autoimmune disorders and allergies to cancer and autism, it is still largely overlooked or ignored.

Patients with multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Crohn’s disease and other autoimmune disorders have seen reductions in flare-ups and intensity of symptoms. Those suffering with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue report more energy and less pain. Furthermore, because of its broad immune-enhancing properties, LDN is an excellent preventive therapy that boosts immune function in older individuals.

REGENERATIVE INJECTION THERAPY (PROLOTHERAPY & PRP)

What is Regenerative injection therapy?

Regenerative Injection Therapy (RIT) - The “alternative to joint surgery”, is spectrum of treatments performed by a licensed physician for various musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain. When you injure tissue, it sends a signal to your body to start the healing process. During the healing process, your body removes damaged tissue and replaces it with new, healthy tissue, which is typically perceived as pain, swelling, and redness.

Often times, we do things to impede the healing process, which results in the injury not heal completely. RIT seeks to replicate the normal tissue healing process by injecting different substances into the injured tissue that stimulates your body’s own natural ability to heal.

RIT offers a safe and effective alternative to steroid injections and/or surgery. Injuries and conditions commonly treated with RIT include:

  • Ligament injuries
  • Tennis / Golfer’s elbow
  • ACL / PCL / Meniscus injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Shoulder / Rotator cuff injuries
  • Back pain
  • Sport injuries
  • And more …

How Does Regenerative Injection Therapy Work?

During the procedure, your doctor injects various orthobiologics into the areas needing attention. This solution increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the site of the injection and stimulates the body’s natural healing process to start repairing and regenerating the tissues.

Types of RIT

Prolotherapy - The word “prolo” comes from proliferation, which means regeneration or growth of tissues. Prolotherapy refers to injections performed to the joint and/or surrounding tissue with different solutions, the most common being a simple mixture of procaine (anesthetic) and dextrose (“sugar water”).

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) - PRP works by injecting a concentrate of the patient’s own platelets (PRP) into the affected area. To obtain the PRP, the patient’s blood is drawn, similar to a routine blood test, and is placed into a special centrifuge machine. This creates a plasma that contains at least six times the concentration of patient’s own platelets and growth factors, helping accelerate tissue repair and regeneration.

Prolozone - Prolozone works by a series of small injections containing a mixture of regenerating solution followed by injections of ozone gas into and around the affected area. Prolozone helps reduce pain and stimulates the healing and regeneration of tissue.

What happens after treatment?

After your injection, it is normal to see some inflammation. This is your body’s natural healing process taking place, accelerated by RIT. The number treatments varies depending on each case, but on average 3 – 7 treatments are required. Most patients tolerate the injections with no problems and there is little to no “down time”, however, your doctor will advise you on when to return to a normal level of physical activity.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture2.jpeg

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an Ancient Chinese medicine therapy that has been practiced for many centuries and is backed by a large body of scientific research.

Acupuncture is based on the theory that energy (“Qi”) or life force flows through and around your body along pathways called “meridians”. When Qi becomes blocked it results in in discomfort and disease. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the flow of qi, bringing the body back into a healthy balance.

Research has identified several mechanisms to explain the effects of acupuncture:

  • Stimulates the release of pain-relieving endorphins
  • Activates natural opioids in the brain that relieve pain and promote sleep.
  • Mobilizes the immune system
  • Triggers the release of neurotransmitters and hormones that have many positives effects on health.

Acupuncture involves placing very thin sterile needles into your skin at strategic points along the different meridians of your body. Which meridians and acupuncture points depends on the condition and imbalances being treated. This is done to influence the unblock and/or influence the flow of your chi and bring it back into balance.

Though it is most often used to relieve pain, acupuncture's wide-ranging effects make it a useful therapy for conditions affecting the digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory, nervous, and cardiovascular systems, and more.

Acupuncture Treatment Sessions

Acupuncture is performed in a relaxed environment. The sterile needles used are so thin that patients rarely feel anything more than a slight tingling sensation. After needle insertion, the lights are lowered and soft music is played to encourage healing relaxation.

During a treatment, which lasts approximately 30 – 60 minutes, your doctor may manipulate (slightly twist the needles) occasionally to "grab" the Qi or utilize electro-acupuncture on several of the needle pairs.

Some conditions clear up with one or two acupuncture treatments. However, chronic health concerns may require multiple sessions. Acupuncture is particularly effective when used along with other innovative therapies.

Joint Aspirations & Injections

Joint aspiration is the removal of fluids from a joint for diagnostic and/or treatment purposes. Joint injections involve injecting medications, typically corticosteroids, into the joint to reduce inflammation and pain. At Infinium Med, we also use a natural extract from the Pitcher’s Plant called Sarapin, which has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Sarapin is produced as medical-grade injectable medication.

Trigger Point Injections (TPI’s)

Trigger points are focal areas of muscle spasm, often located in the upper back and shoulder areas. They may irritate the nerves around them and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body. TPI’s is a procedure used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points. Typically, the injection contains an anesthetic and possibly a corticosteroid and/or other substances.

Breathing Treatments

Breathing treatments involve inhaling medications in a mist form using a nebulizer device. At Infinium Med, we use both prescription medications (albuterol, ipratropium) and natural medicines (i.e. Allicin, an extract from garlic that has strong antimicrobial properties, glutathione, NAC).

Botox®

Botox® is a quick and painless procedure designed to restore freshness, youth, and beauty to faces that have been damaged by the process of living.  When used properly, BOTOX® dramatically decreases frown lines, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet. Since its clearance by the FDA in 2002, providing proof of its safety and effectiveness, BOTOX® has become the single most popular non-surgical, cosmetic procedure in the United States.

Cosmetic PRP

A revolutionary new anti-aging treatment using the patient’s own blood. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, commonly referred to as the “Vampire Facelift”, involves the use of blood plasma, enriched through a special process to increase the concentration of platelets. This plasma contains bioactive proteins and growth factors that serve to accelerate tissue repair and regeneration, and activate stem cells.
